Curt Balan

Curt Balan (also Kurt Balan ; born October 4, 1855 in Breslau ; † December 4, 1921 in Potsdam ) was a German consistorial president of the church province of Posen .

Life

Curt Balan began studying law in Breslau after obtaining his university entrance qualification , where he was active in the Corps Lusatia Breslau .

After completing his studies, Curt Balan embarked on a career in church administration. At the end of the 1870s he was in Berlin , where he was in close contact with Eberhard von Rothkirch , Eduard von Pückler and Andreas von Bernstorff . Eventually he was appointed President of the Consistory of the Ecclesiastical Province of Poznan in the Evangelical Church of the older Prussian provinces . In 1919 he successfully fought against the internment of Protestant pastors by the now Polish administration and then tried, largely in vain, to prevent the clergy from emigrating from the predominantly Catholic region. As Consistorial President he accompanied the transformation of the part of the ecclesiastical province in re-established Poland into the Uniate Evangelical Church in Poland .

family

The son of the Privy Councilor of Justice Frederic Balan (1806-1884) and grandson of the Prussian diplomat Louis Balan comes from the Huguenot family Balan (Valan), originally based in Montauban, whose ancestor Joseph Balan (1686-1736) after the Edict of Nantes was repealed Louis XIV left his homeland and fled to Prussia at the end of the 17th century. Curt Balan married Magdalene Meuss in Breslau in 1884, daughter of the Chief Public Prosecutor Friedrich Adalbert Meuss.
