The Cuxhaven was a British coal freighter that was sunk by a German submarine after being sold to Italy during World War I.

Coal freighter Cuxhaven

The Cuxhaven was built in 1882 at the WB Thompson & Co. shipyard in Dundee with hull number 40. The client was the Yorkshire Coal & Steam Shipping Co. in Goole , England . The steamship of 950 GRT was used to transport coal from the Yorkshire mines . The shipping company, and with it Cuxhaven , was taken over by Goole Steam Shipping Co. in 1895. This in turn became the property of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway in 1905 . For the Cuxhaven this change of ownership did not mean any changes in their service.

Coastal cargo ship Torero

In 1911 the ship was sold to Giuseppe Sfilio in Palermo and, after being renamed Torero , it was sold to Soc. Trasporti Internazionali Marittimi in Palermo, from which the ship was used as a coastal freighter. During the First World War , the torero was on November 1, 1916, on the voyage from Naples to Palermo, about 6 nautical miles north-northeast of Capo Gallo at position 38 ° 18 ′ 0 ″  N , 13 ° 22 ′ 48 ″  E by the German submarine U 21 sunk by artillery fire under Kapitänleutnant Otto Hersing . The crew was able to go into their boats beforehand and save themselves.
