Cyanea quercifolia (English common name : Oakleaf Cyanea ) is an extinct , Hawaiian plant species from the subfamily Lobelioideae withinthe bellflower family (Campanulaceae). It was endemic to Maui .

The first description was in 1888 as a variety Cyanaea Solanacea var. Quercifolia by William Hillebrand . Franz Elfried Wimmer gave it the status of an independent species under the name Cyanea quercifolia in 1943 .

description

Cyanea quercifolia was a small tree with heights of about 5 meters. The trunks of this species had small sharp bulges and spikes. The elongated egg-shaped leaves were 30 to 50 centimeters long. Little is known about the flowers. According to Hillebrand's description, however, they are said to have looked similar to those of the species Cyanea solanacea , which has white to purple flowers 48 to 60 millimeters long. The fruits were fleshy berries with a diameter of 16 millimeters.

Occurrence and habitat

Cyanea quercifolia grew in dry and semi-arid forests near Ulupalakua on the southwestern side of Haleakalā on Maui at altitudes between 900 and 1200 meters.

die out

Cyanea quercifolia is only known from a collection by Wilhelm Hillebrand from 1870. In the period that followed, the only known site was converted into pastureland and the endemic vegetation was destroyed by goats, cattle, invasive plants and fires.
