Cycle d'orientation
The Cycle d'orientation ( CO ; in German : orientation cycle ) is the name of the reformed secondary school in the canton of Geneva , which comprises the last three compulsory school years (the 9th, 10th and 11th school years).
history
In the 1920s, Councilor André Oltramare proposed the establishment of a middle school to make it easier for working class children to access higher education . Only at the beginning of the 1960s, government councilor Alfred Borel , under pressure from young politicians, took up the project again. At the beginning it was planned that the 7th school year (today the 9th school year) would be organized as tronc commun («common curriculum»). Borel was unable to complete the project because he was not re-elected in 1961.
His successor André Chavanne managed the implementation, among other things, by encouraging the municipalities to be able to reduce the number of their school buildings, since the creation of the Cycle d'orientation should shorten primary school time by one year. At the start of school in 1962, the various (long or humanistic or short or professionally oriented) study types were combined in Cycles d'orientation . In view of harsh criticism from the employers' associations, Councilor Chavanne had to forego the tronc commun for the 7th school year (now the 9th school year) in order not to endanger the secondary school reform as a whole.
The first facility of this new kind was only for girls; Mixed classes did not exist in the Cycles d'orientation until 1969. Government Councilor Chavanne, who headed the Education Department until 1985, successfully completed the reform, among other things because he was able to justify the reforms with financial reasons. Today he is considered to be the innovator of the Geneva school system, which in addition to the Cycle d'orientation also includes the Collège du soir (evening school), the École de culture générale (technical secondary school) and the Université du 3e âge (senior university).
