The Cyclobacteriaceae are a family of Gram-negative bacteria . The type genus is Cyclobacterium Raj and Maloy 1990 . The name is derived from the Greek word kyklos ("circle") and refers to the appearance of these bacteria, the cells can be horseshoe-shaped or ring-shaped. Most species come from seawater , marine sediments, seaweed or various marine animals, for example Echinicola pacifica was isolated from a species of sea urchin , Strongylocentrotus intermedius .
Appearance
The gram test turns out negative. These are rod-shaped cells, some species also form horseshoe-shaped or ring-like cells. The size is 0.7 × 0.3 - 10 µm . They do not form flagella and are usually not motile, but some can glide. These include B. Species of Echinicola . They are aerobic , the metabolism is mostly breathing , some species use fermentation . The colonies are colored pink, red, or orange. The oxidase test and the catalase test are positive.
metabolism
The bacteria are chemoorganotrophic . The metabolic type is usually breathing. Some, like Aquiflexum and Belliella, can reduce nitrate to nitrite . Echinicola pacifica, which is isolated from brackish water, ferments D-glucose .
