Cynara cornigera is a perennial stem hemicryptophyte that reaches heights of growth of 10 to 20, rarely up to 50 centimeters. The basal leaves are 25 to 50 centimeters long, 8 to 22 centimeters wide, double pinnately fissured, white-veined and longer than the stem. They have 2 to 7 millimeters long, not tufted thorns. The appendages of the middle bracts are spoon-shaped, transversely elliptical and sharply point into a 20 to 50 millimeter long spine. The shell is more or less spherical, 32 to 60 millimeters long and 33 to 70 millimeters wide. The crown is usually yellowish, more rarely purple. The fruit measures 7 × 3.5 millimeters. The pappus is 19 to 31 millimeters in size.

The flowering period extends from April to June.

Occurrence

Cynara cornigera occurs in the eastern Mediterranean . Their distribution area includes Greece, Libya, Egypt, Cyprus, Crete and the Aegean Sea. The species grows in rocky phrygana , crevices and on fallow land. In Crete it can be found at altitudes from 0 to 850 meters.
