Cynara cyrenaica is a perennial stem hemicryptophyte that reaches heights of 20 to 80 centimeters. The basal leaves are 12 to 33 centimeters long, 6 to 10 centimeters wide, double-pinnate, monochrome green and shorter than the stem. The leaf margin is clearly curled. The appendages of the middle bracts are ovate to narrowly ovate and indistinct. The envelope measures 32 to 36 × (20) 25 to 28 millimeters and is broadly ovoid. The crown is colored purple or blue-violet.

The flowering period extends from May to August.

Occurrence

Cynara cyrenaica occurs in the area of ​​the southern Aegean and Cyrenaica . The species grows in Phrygana and on fallow land. In Crete it can be found at altitudes of 400 to 700 meters.
