Cypripedium subtropicum is a species of plant in the genus Cypripedium in the orchid family (Orchidaceae). It comes from the southwest of China and is the largest Cypripedium specieswith a height of 1.5 meters.

features

Cypripedium subtropicum is a perennial plant with a short rhizome that reaches heights of up to 1.5 meters. The fleshy roots are 2 to 3 millimeters in diameter. The stem is hairy. At the bottom it is five to six low sheets wrapped, the bottom three or four are bare and measure 3.5 to 9 centimeters, to be upward, the low sheets is larger (10 to 13 centimeters), and have hairy leaf veins. Nine to ten leaves follow the lower leaves . These are elliptical-oblong to broadly lanceolate, 21 to 33 inches long and 8 to 10.5 inches wide. The upper side is bare, the leaf veins have hairs on the underside, the leaf edge is slightly ciliated. The leaves end with a long pointed tip, at the base they narrow into a 1 to 2 centimeter long stem that sits on the stem without any separating tissue.

Via the leaves sits branch axle as racemose inflorescence continued. The inflorescence stalk measures about 20 centimeters, the part of the inflorescence axis occupied by up to seven flowers measures another 15 centimeters. The bracts are narrowly lanceolate, 1 to 3 inches long, 0.2 to 0.3 inches wide and turned back downwards. Pedicel and ovary together measure 4.5 centimeters. The inflorescence axis, bracts, pedicel and ovary are hairy reddish brown. The flowers are yellow, the petals are also hairy reddish brown on the outside. The upper sepal is ovoid-elliptical and measures 3.5 to 4 centimeters in length by 2 to 2.5 centimeters in width, the two lateral sepals are fused together to form a synsepal, which is slightly wider than the dorsal sepal. The lateral petals are shorter and narrower. The lip is dotted red, the edges around the elongated opening are turned inwards. The staminodium is tongue-shaped and ends bluntly, at the base it has a short stalk.

Flowering time is in July.

Occurrence

Cypripedium subtropicum was first found in 1980 in Mêdog County in southeastern Tibet. It grows there at altitudes of 1400 meters in alder forests. The distribution area extends from southeastern Tibet to southern Yunnan and northern Vietnam.
