Cyril Romney

Cyril B. Romney (born March 1, 1931 in Tortola , British Virgin Islands , † July 19, 2007 in Miami , Florida ) was a Chief Minister of the British Virgin Islands .

Life

Romney first worked as a teacher before studying economics at the Interamerican University of Puerto Rico . He later completed postgraduate studies in economics and political science at Syracuse University , completing this with a master's degree .

Romney became the first local to be appointed Financial Secretary of the British Virgin Islands in 1969 and was first elected to the Legislative Council in 1979.

In the November 1983 general election he was the only successful independent candidate, formed a coalition with the United Party , which he also joined as a member, and became Chief Minister. During his almost three-year tenure until October 1, 1986, the Virgin Islands became an offshore financial center , which resulted in them having one of the highest per capita incomes in terms of gross domestic product .

After the end of his term in office he was the leader of the opposition between 1986 and 1990 and retired from political life after losing his seat on the Legislative Council in the 1995 elections.
