The Czekanowskiberge ( Russian Кряж Чекановского , after the Russian spelling also Chekanowskiberge or Chekanowskiücken ) are up to 539  m high low mountain range of the Central Siberian mountains , each in the north of Siberia , Russia and the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) ( Asia ).

Geographical location

The rocky mountain range is an average of almost 600 km north of the northern Arctic Circle , located just south of the Arctic Ocean belonging Laptev Sea and southeast of the Olenjokgolfs in which the Olenjok flows. It forms the extreme northeast of the central Siberian mountainous region. West of the mountains flows the Olenjok, beyond that there is the North Siberian Lowland and northeast of the mountain range is the 45,000 square kilometer Lena Delta as the estuary of the mountain on the east passing Lena with the located beyond Charaulachrücken . The mountain range with high plateau-like areas in many places is 320 km long.

Settlements

The interior of the mountain is uninhabited. However, at the edges to the northwest of the mouth of the Buolkalach river in the Olenjok, the Ust-Olenjok on the Olenjokufer lies, and to the west, the somewhat distant Sklad is also on the Olenjok . To the east on the Lena is Tit-Ary , further south on the Chekurovka River and in the far southeast on the other side of the Lenaufer Kjuыsjur .

Geology, climate and fauna

From a geological point of view, the mountains consist of Mesozoic sandstones and slates . The winters are extremely cold and long, the summers cold and short. Due to the northern location and the proximity of the Arctic Laptev Sea, permafrost , frost rubble deserts and tundra with typical vegetation of mosses and lichens predominate.

Name origin

The mountains were named after the Polish geologist Aleksander Czekanowski (1833–1876) who carried out research in Siberia, among other places.
