Dédé - Erik's detective Deschamps

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dédé - Erik's detective Deschamps , also called Dédé for short , is a comic series by Erik with a classic crime story about a private detective from Paris. Dédé's private life is defined by the people who return, mainly from the area around his regular café. However, the focus is on the cases, usually with a hint of mystery but ultimately rationally explainable. Erik himself sees the comic as “semi-funny grown up in the tradition of the Franco-Belgian classics. Just a little bad. "

publication

The first album, are you dead, madame? , matured to its final form in the drawer for almost ten years. Influenced by a Hergé exhibition, the first version was graphically strongly based on the classic Ligne claire , but in terms of content it already had a lot of the third (and final) version. In 2007 Erik sent a dossier with a second version (fully drawn, inked and lettered in French), two short stories of 22 pages each about Detective Dédé (worked out in the same form) and first drafts of the second album to a Franco-Belgian publisher, but received a rejection . In addition to the graphic maturity, the second version differs significantly from the final version in the character design of the main character. Erik also plans to redraw the short stories, as he is still very satisfied with the stories, but no longer with the drawings, so he does not want to publish them in their original form. Three more 22 pages are still awaiting revision and publication.

Even so, Dédé was ultimately Erik's first printed comic. The debut album was released in May 2010, one month before the first chapter of Deae ex machina was preprinted in Comix 06/2010. Erik came under contract with Nordhastedter Epsilon Verlag, for whom the publication of the several hundred pages long epic Deae , like the French colleague at Eiszeit (for the time being) seemed too risky. At the time Erik's work was already known to the publishing director Mark O. Fischer, he was also the editor-in-chief of the comic magazine Zack when an interview with Erik was printed there in April 2009. So they agreed on a complete story of 46 pages, with the option of a series and based on the earlier concept.

In contrast to the Deae , which was originally planned for an A5 publication and in which the drawings were ultimately reproduced in A4 with a reduction to 90% of their original size, Dédé was designed from the beginning on the album format, was drawn in A3 format and on Printed 70% down. Although Erik underestimated the additional work involved and after half the deadline had only finished a third of the album, he was able to meet the deadline and finish it in time for the Erlangen Comic Salon in 2010. Drawn he has the third version of mid-October 2009 to mid-February 2010 then scanned originals, in about four days lettered and colored a month in Indesign.

At Erik's first presentation in Erlangen, he signed and drew on his albums for eight hours over four days. It turned out that this had become the most successful trade fair presentation of the Epsilon Verlag to date, after which Erik was able to start with the second album in July. He completed it in early March 2011. At the Munich Comic Festival 2011 he was only able to present the new album at the David Bollers Zampano Verlag booth (renamed Virtual Graphics in 2013), as Epsilon did not rent a booth there. For this he won the ICOM prize for outstanding artwork .

This was followed by volumes 3 and 4 in February 2012 and March 2013, the first story divided into two albums, which, in terms of its basic concept, was the very first Dédé story. Before further adventures (and a planned new science fiction series), the Deae should first be completed.

Recurring characters

  • Detective Deschamps answers the phone, also to new clients, always with a “call me Dédé”. He tends to be overweight and short of breath, which is not surprising given the size of the baguettes he likes to eat during observation, but is still successful with women. He also has the habit of dropping the title of the story once in each volume.
  • Yvette is his girlfriend. Even if he occasionally neglects her severely or does not bring the desired souvenir from a trip, she can never be seriously angry with him. She also works as a waitress in Dédé's regular café La Lorraine .
  • Fronsac is the owner of the café, an often grumpy contemporary, but Dédé also occasionally owes the bill or even a rent.
  • Besnard is another regular customer at La Lorraine , Dédé's preferred chess partner and red wine lover. (You shouldn't drink coffee there anyway.)
  • Océane, the medical student, moves in as a new neighbor in the detective's house in the third album. She also has the opportunity to test her academic knowledge on a badly dressed Dédé and likes to change hair color and outfit.

reception

  • Klaus Schikowski sees in his review of Are you dead, Madame? in Comix 07/2010 "a lively style of drawing - located in the middle between semi-funny and realistic" and a "grippingly narrated thriller that appears imported directly from France not only because of the final 'fin'."
  • On the occasion of the nomination of the first album for the Max and Moritz Audience Award 2012, Hella von Sinnen finds Dédé “awesome” and attests “the most wonderful details and props”, “masterful handling of light and shadow” and “mysterious serial murders at high speed and gloomy atmosphere ”.
