David Boller

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

David Boller (born March 31, 1968 in Zurich ) is a Swiss comic artist , comic author and publisher.

Life

David Boller was fascinated by comics even as a child, and was equally interested in manga , Franco-Belgian comics and superhero comics from the United States. He published his first fanzine , Funni , at the age of 14 and based it on role models such as André Franquin and Greg . His second, Schatten , came out in six editions from 1988 onwards. According to Volker Hamann, Boller is already recognizable as "a talented and stylistically confident comic artist".

In the early 1990s, according to information in Boller's autobiographical comic Ewiger Himmel from autumn 1992 to summer 1994, he graduated from the Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Art in Dover, New Jersey . At the same time he drew, without a work permit and against Joe Kubert's instructions, some commissions for Marvel Comics : a story in an Excalibur yearbook, two issues of a Spider-Man sub-series and some issues by Night Trasher . However, the dual burden of professional activity and teaching forced him to quit working for Marvel before graduating from high school. As a lecturer at the Kubert School, Boller met Tim Hildebrandt and through him his twin brother Greg and niece Mary.

After graduating, Boller continued to draw for Marvel, DC Comics , Acclaim Comics , Wildstorm , Top Cow and WaRP Graphics . He married Mary Hildebrandt and created Kaos Moon for Caliber Comics, his first series with his own characters. Under the pseudonym Lime, he and his wife published Evergrey and Yaru , two “ Manga-style ” comic books in 2006 and 2007 at the German subsidiary of Tokyopop . Also in 2007, the “French manga” Exécutrice Women, based on a scenario by Nick Meylaender, was published by Les Humanoïdes Associés . In addition, David Boller worked on storyboards during his time in the United States.

In 2008 David Boller and Mary Hildebrandt moved to Switzerland. Boller founded an online platform for webcomics and a publisher called Zampano. For the webcomics site he received an honorable mention in the context of the ICOM Independent Comic Prize 2011, the publisher was renamed Virtual Graphics. As a rule, Boller publishes his and other works in parallel in German, English and French. In 2014, the comic adaptation of Karl Kraus ' Die last Tage der Menschheit, drawn by Boller, was published as a commissioned work based on a scenario by the publisher Reinhard Pietsch .

Works

Kaos Moon

With Kaos Moon , Boller was able to implement a comic book series with his own characters for the first time in the United States. A total of four regular issues were published by Caliber Comics, which were also licensed for German-speaking countries by Alpha Comic Verlag and published in Schwermetall magazine and in two albums . Some short stories appeared in anthology booklets, two of them in German in Schwermetall . Favored by the crisis in the US comic market in 1996, triggered by the bankruptcy of the comic distributor Capital City Distribution and the legal problems of Alpha Verlag, only four regular issues and a few short stories in anthologies were published. In 2011, all stories, including one previously unpublished, were published by Zampano.

Bakuba and other African stories

The six short stories in the collection, which Boller published as the first volume of his publishing house, were written between 1990 and 2009. The cover story, Bakuba, is the oldest and was first published in Schatten .

Eternal heaven

The first six of eight chapters were pre-published in parallel as a webcomic on Zampano and in Comix magazine (with interruptions from issue 06/2010 to 01/2013). David Boller processes his time in the United States as an autobiographical comic.

Aïr

The historical story of a Tuareg uprising is laid out on two albums. The first also appeared on Zampano and in Comix (edition 11/2011 to 02/2012) before the book edition followed.

Comic ladies

Stories from the erotic world: The reader should get an insight into the everyday life of prostitutes and club owners. The first volume was published in 2016: Fifi's brothel adventures.
