The Yunus Emre Institute is a Turkish organization founded in 2007 and based in Ankara to promote the Turkish language and culture abroad. The current director of the institute is Şeref Ateş.

It is named after the Anatolian poet and mystic Yunus Emre . By mid-2014, more than 50,000 foreigners had taken advantage of the programs. The Yunus Emre Institute thus performs a similar task to the Goethe Institute for Germany. This idea of ​​a Turkish model was articulated by the then head of the TDK Ahmet Ercilasun in 2000. In 2007 the project was implemented with the establishment of the Yunus Emre Foundation (Law No. 5653). President Abdullah Gül , who was elected in 2007, is a founding member and honorary chairman of the foundation.

In 2014, criticism sparked the appointment of Hayati Develi as chairman of the institute, who, according to the Cumhuriyet newspaper, in his books through hostile statements to the religious minority of the Alevis such as " Kizilbash making bad prayers - may Allah make them despicable and miserable until the end of the day" noticed. The consultant at the Yunus Emre Institute, Onur Bilge Kula, resigned from his post because he did not want his name in line with Develi.

Cultural centers

The institute opened Turkish cultural centers as its branch offices in various countries in order to achieve its goals.

There are 43 cultural centers abroad worldwide. Turkish courses are offered there in various courses and seminars. In various activities such as symposia, conferences and panel discussions, celebrities from art, culture and science meet interested parties. The institute is represented in German-speaking countries with three cultural centers in Berlin (since 2012), Cologne (since 2014) and Vienna (since 2015).

Essential areas of activity

The main focus of the institute is the Turkish language. Analogous to the European language portfolio, it enables the language to be learned with the most modern options in specially equipped classes and by qualified teachers. The competence test carried out by the institute in Turkish is an internationally valid test system that is recognized at universities in Turkey.

The aim of the courses in the field of culture is to bring Turkish culture and art closer to the public. With work rooms and libraries in the cultural centers, whose holdings are determined by experts, the institute offers researchers and scientists a wide range of services. Furthermore, the training of qualified academics and researchers in the field of the Turkish language, history, culture and art is supported through certificate programs and advanced training.

The institute presents Turkey's cultural treasure at concerts, exhibitions, events, panel discussions, interviews and trade fairs. As part of cooperation agreements, the Turkish cultural centers offer counseling services to those who want to study or study in Turkey.
