Michel Louis Albert Regnier (born May 5, 1931 in Ixelles ; † October 29, 1999 in Neuilly ), known under the pseudonym Greg , was a Belgian - French comic book author who had a significant influence on the development of Franco - Belgian comics for over five decades . More than 250 albums of different genres such as humor, adventure, espionage, western and science fiction bear his signature as a copywriter or illustrator. He became known as a draftsman through Albert Enzian , among others , and his fame as a copywriter is based on series such as Andy Morgan , Bruno Brazil and Comanche .

Career

Régnier grew up in Herstal . In 1947, at the age of 16, he published the first comic he had drawn in the Belgian magazine Vers l'Avenir : Nestor et Boniface . Initially, he preferred hero comics. In 1953 and 1956 he drew the adventure series Le Chat with borrowings from Batman under the pseudonym Michel Denys for the magazine Héroïc-Albums . At the same time he began to work as a copywriter for other illustrators. He wrote a variety of short-lived series, such as Bison et Quistiti (draftsman: René Fourage), Tiger Joe (draftsman: Gérald Forton) and Alain et Christine (illustrated by Martial) as well as a number of other series for Tintin magazine . In 1963 he invented his most famous series for Pilote magazine : Achille Talon (German Albert Enzian ). In the same year he published another series, Les As, drawn by himself in Vaillant .

André Franquin , meanwhile overwhelmed with work, asked Greg for help writing his main series Spirou and Fantasio . For the Belgian comic magazine Spirou , one after the other, Captured in the Valley of the Buddhas (1958–1959), the short story At the Other End Anxiety (1959) and the two-part series Der Plan des Zyklotrop (1959–1960) and Im Banne des Z (1960), in which the mad scientist cyclotrope makes his first appearance. At the same time, In the Empire of the Red Elephants (1959) was published in the French daily La Parisien libéré . Greg had his last assignment for the series when Franquin got stuck with a story that was almost halfway through. For him he wrote QRN calls Bretzelburg (1963) to an end after a long break.

Régniers also wrote several stories from Tibet's series Chick Bill , Club des Peur-de-Rien and Mouminet. At Hergé's request , he also wrote a scenario for Tintin , which was never realized as an album.

From 1965 to 1974 Régnier, who meanwhile signed his works with Greg, was editor-in-chief of Tintin magazine . In this capacity, he tested a number of new series in collaboration with young, as yet unknown illustrators by publishing short stories that would later develop into classics of Franco-Belgian comics: from 1966 he wrote Andy Morgan for Hermann , from 1967 Luc Orient for Paape , from 1968 Bruno Brazil for Vance and from 1969 Comanche , also for Hermann. In 1969 he also worked on the cinematic implementation of the Tintin album Tintin and the Sun Temple , and in 1972 he wrote the script for the cartoon Tintin and the Shark Lake .

In the mid-1970s Greg went to the Dargaud publishing house and also published the Achille Talon Magazine , 6 issues were published up to 1976. He also continued to create comic series and scripts for film and television productions.

In 1987 he wrote the first adventures of the new Marsupilami series for Franquin and Batem . In the following years he continued his old successful series Comanche (with Michel Rouge ) and Andy Morgan (with Dany and Aidans ) with new cartoonists . At the same time, new series such as Colby for Michel Blanc-Dumont (1991) or Tobo for Pierre-Yves Gabrion (1993) continued to emerge .

He died of an aneurysm at the age of 68 .
