Percy Pickwick (in the French original Clifton ) is a humorous comic series. The albums were published in German translation by Carlsen from 1983 to 2013 . The stories were also published in the magazines Zack (under the original title), Fix and Foxi and in various other Kauka publications (as Clifton and Sir Harold ) and Yps .

Authors

The Percy Pickwick series was developed in 1959 by Raymond Macherot (1924–2008) in French for the Belgian magazine Tintin / Kuifje . Macherot drew and wrote three stories. When he left Tintin for Spirou magazine in 1964 , he had to leave behind the rights to the character Percy Pickwick. It wasn't until 1969 that the editor-in-chief of Tintin magazine Greg created another scenario for which he was able to win Jo-El Azara as an illustrator. In 1971 the series was taken over and expanded by the successful duo Turk (drawings) and de Groot (text). In 1984 Bédu replaced Turk as a draftsman and from 1991 also de Groot as a scenario writer (until 1994). In 2003 de Groot took over the series again and created four more stories together with the illustrator Michel Rodrigue . Since 2016, new volumes with drawings by Turk and texts by Zidrou have been published .

content

Percy Pickwick (in the French original Colonel Sir Harold Wilberforce Clifton ) is a former British colonel and secret agent of MI5 , Her Majesty's domestic secret service . Although he has retired from the service, he always has to do tricky jobs for the British government (MI5 or MI6 , the foreign secret service) or for Scotland Yard . With a mixture of British composure and irascibility, as well as humor, he masters every situation.

Pickwick lives near London in Puddington with his longtime housekeeper Miss Partridge (also in the original; at Zack, Kauka and Yps as Miss Plumpudding ), who is famous for her award-winning goulash. (The name Partridge may be a reference to Agatha Christie's novel The Shadow Hand , in which a similarly described housekeeper of the same name appears.) Percy Pickwick drives a red MG TD (model built between 1949 and 1953) with registration LKP 323 which suffers a lot in almost all stories, but is lovingly repaired again and again. Pickwick's other hobbies are the Boy Scouts ( Scouts ), his cats and his collection of cigar rings. Pickwick was knighted in the course of the plot of Murder is Trump (French: Mortelle Saison ) for his services in rescuing a member of the royal family .

development

In the past 58 years (2017) there have been 26 album-length stories and 13 short stories with a total of over 1,200 pages. While in the 1970s and 1980s the focus of the series was on the humorous side of both the characters and the plot, a “harder” pace of the stories can be observed in recent years. Pickwick , who was originally laid out as a retired World War II pilot who only occasionally steps in as a detective and amateur agent, is now portrayed as an active agent who acts in James Bond fashion - one could even think of the introduction of " Pickwick Girls ”(analogous to the Bond Girls ).

Publications

In addition to the original, the series is published in Belgium (Dutch and French editions by Lombard) also in England (by Cinebook ) and the Scandinavian countries Denmark, Norway and Sweden (by Carlsen) as well as in Greece. In German-speaking countries, Clifton first appeared as a cover illustration in issue 10/1964 of the Swiss magazine Tim (Atar Verlag). Since 1973, the series appears in various comic magazines, first from 1973 to 1976 at the Coral-Verlag as Colonel Clifton , then from 1977 to 1985 at the Caucasus publishing as Clifton and as Sir Harald and 1981-1998 as Percy Paul Pickwick at Gruner + Jahr .

From 1983 to 2013 the Reinbeker and Hamburg Carlsen Verlag published a 22-volume album edition by Percy Pickwick . The cover design followed the French album editions, apart from changes in the title logo. In a new edition after 2008, new cover pictures were partly created (Carlsen albums 2, 7, 9 and 12). A six-volume complete edition was published by Toonfish in 2014/2015 , where the new albums have also been released since 2016.

Change of name in Germany

For the recording of the stories in Yps from 1981, the editors there, under the direction of Norbert Hinze, decided to rename the title hero "Percy Paul Pickwick", as the similar-sounding detective series Perry Clifton was published at the same time. When Carlsen-Verlag started publishing albums in 1983, the Yps editorial team asked the then Carlsen Comics editor-in-chief Eckart Sackmann to continue using the fantasy name there. This was also retained in the complete edition by Splitter-Verlag from 2014.

Title overview (original order of publication)

In the magazine publications of the individual publishers as well as in the Carlsen album publication, the original order is not adhered to.
(The full number indicates the original sequence, not the album number; short stories are counted with K; the length of the stories is given as S. ).
