The Dürkheimer Riesenfass , locally mostly just called Fass or in the dialect Därgemer Fass , is a sight in the Palatinate spa and district town of Bad Dürkheim ( Rhineland-Palatinate ). The giant barrel has a diameter of 13.5 m and a volume of around 1,700,000 liters, corresponding to 1,700 m³, making it the largest barrel in the world. However, it is not used to store liquids, but houses a restaurant.

Geographical location

The giant barrel, St.-Michaels-Allee 1, stands at 115  m above sea level northeast of the old town in the floodplain of the Isenach river on the western edge of the 45,000 m² Brühlwiesen . Every year on the second and third weekend in September, the Dürkheim sausage market takes place here, which is considered the largest wine festival in the world with over 600,000 visitors . The access to the barrel and sausage market is via the federal road 37 ( Ludwigshafen am Rhein - Kaiserslautern ), which passes directly to the north .

history

1934: Construction of the giant barrel

The drum was in 1934 by the bath Dürkheimer winery owner and coopers champion Fritz Keller in a traditional manner and form, albeit oversized wooden. For this purpose, almost 200 fir trees were felled in the northern Black Forest , each of which was around 40 m high. One fir tree was required to make one of the 178  barrel staves, each 15 m long and 15 cm thick. A total of more than 200 m³ of wood was processed. The wood was prepared and delivered by the Krauth & Co. sawmill in Rotenbach im Enztal.

With the construction of the Dürkheim giant barrel, the large barrel of Heidelberg Castle , which was 9 m long, 7 m in diameter and had a volume of 221,726 liters, was surpassed many times over as the largest barrel in the world.

Furnishing

The Dürkheim giant barrel bears the inscription “Dürkheim giant barrel” in old spelling on the front facing east . Inside it is designed like a wine bar . It can accommodate almost 430 guests on two levels (ground floor and gallery). Because of the number of visitors the wooden "Bütt" was built in 1958, a similarly oversized tub that matches the style of the giant barrel and provides space for about 120 guests. During the year, catering takes place almost exclusively in the "Bütt"; the barrel itself is only accessible to guests during the Dürkheim sausage market and to large groups by prior arrangement.
