Franz Dürnhardt
Franz Dürnhardt was mayor of Braunau am Inn during the Bavarian uprising in 1705
In December 1705, the Landesdefensionskongress met in Braunau, which is also known as the Braunau parliament . During this time Franz Dürnhardt was mayor of the city of Braunau.
Christian Probst reports that on November 19, 1705, Mayor Franz Dürnhardt in Haselbach declared the aims of the uprising: The single boys no longer wanted to be drafted into military service; the well-to-do population wanted to be exempt from all taxes for a year so that they could recover from the burdens of recent years; the imperial occupation troops should leave the country, and the population should have the right, should a foreign force approach the country again, to defend themselves by force of arms; one wants to establish unhindered contact with the other pension offices to agree on a common approach; these points were to be submitted to the imperial administration under Count Löwenstein for decision.
During the siege of Braunau by the rebellious peasants, Mayor Dürnhardt summoned the city commander Georg Ignaz Graf von Tattenbach to surrender for God's sake if he and the imperial garrison wanted to stay alive; he could no longer restrain the raging citizens of Braunau. Count von Tattenbach agreed and sent a drum outside the city and let Chamade beat, the drum signal that announces the surrender to the enemy. Then he asked the besiegers to let the water back into the town of Braunau so that it could be extinguished.
Baron Wolf Heinrich von Gemmel issued on November 29, 1705 on behalf of the administration and the landscape of Upper and Lower Bavaria a warning patent for the revolt. In it he promised that war taxes and winter quarters would be lowered and that recruiting would be reduced, if not stopped, provided the revolters put down their guns . On November 30, 1705 Gemmel sent four captured farmers with the patent to Braunau with the order to bring back an answer from the leaders there. The four came back that same day and brought two letters with them. The commanding officers in Braunau wrote to Gemmel that only some of the peasantry could be gathered and their patent read out; But they want to question everyone and send a clear explanation within two days. Mayor Franz Dürnhardt wrote that he had already tried to mediate, which had been badly received by the farmers and some of the citizens; but he hoped that the rebels would give in if, as had been reported, troops from Salzburg and Bohemia moved in.
When news of the destruction of Hoffmann's corps at Aidenbach arrived in Braunau on January 9, 1706 , the State Defense Congress was seized by deep discouragement. On the following day, however, the Congress ordered the implementation of its decisions of the last few days, in particular the implementation of the general contingent and the formation of the dragoon regiment. You didn't want to submit. On the other hand, the representatives of the cities and markets in particular now demanded more and more emphatically that peace negotiations should be initiated, whereupon the Congress decided to send a deputation to the Prince Archbishop of Salzburg Johann Ernst Graf von Thun and through Count Tattenbach with Baron Georg Friedrich von Kriechbaum to contact you.
On January 11, 1706 the deputation traveled to Salzburg. In addition to Mayor Dürnhardt, it included Barons Franz von Paumgarten and Franz Bernhard von Prielmayr , Mayor Georg Ludwig Harter von Burghausen and the farmer Franz Nagelstätter.
After the popular uprising at the imperial court was put down, Archbishop Count von Thun successfully campaigned for Mayor Dürnhardt and the Braunau coppersmith Andreas Thanner.
