Roses metal is a bismuth alloy with lead and tin near the ternary eutectic . The melting point of approx. 94 ° C is below the boiling point of water at normal pressure. The alloy was developed by the German pharmacist Valentin Rose the Elder .

It consists of approx.

  • two parts by weight (50%) bismuth (Bi)
  • one part by weight (25%) of lead (Pb) and
  • one part by weight (25%) tin (Sn)

and has a density of 9.32 g / cm³. Deviating from the weight ratios given, other values ​​for melting point and density result.

Rose's metal is therefore identical to D'Arcet's metal (after Jean d'Arcet ). It also resembles Wood's metal , which melts at 73 to 77 ° C ; however, it is less toxic as it does not contain cadmium .

Rose metal is used, for example, to monitor the temperature and as a heating and cooling fluid, but also as soft solder and for fuses . Since July 1, 2006, according to ElektroG, the use of lead-containing solder alloys for new electrical and electronic devices has only been permitted in exceptional cases in Germany.

Under the name MCP96, it is used in radiation therapy for the production of individual shielding blocks. Polystyrene panels are usually used as casting molds .

It was also used to secure iron railings and balustrades in stone sockets.
