As series 728 the designated German Federal Railroad Service Cars for transportation of railway staff or for testing Indusi -Streckeneinrichtungen. There were a total of three copies of this series, of which two were personnel carriers and one was a measuring vehicle. Both variants were created by converting Uerdinger rail buses .

Personnel carriers

The team cars 728 001-9 and 728 002-7 were built from the rail buses 795 447-2 and 795 448-0 of the DB class VT 95 . These were retired in 1980.

Indusi measuring car

With the increasing use of inductive train control , special measuring vehicles became necessary to check the correct functioning of the line equipment. As a replacement for the first vehicle 724 001 , which was converted for this purpose in 1968 and retired in 1986, a rail bus of the DB series VT 98 with the vehicle number 798 813 was converted into a test vehicle for Indusi track facilities in the Kassel repair shop . In the computer-readable numbering scheme with 728 001-9 as a second occupancy, the vehicle was given the same designation as the decommissioned first crew car.

In the course of the renovation, the vehicle was given the typical yellow color of the measuring vehicle. In addition to the measurement technology, additional work lights were installed and some side windows were closed. To check the safety devices, the measuring vehicle had two test magnets with which the function of the track system was checked. Entry and exit signals could thus be checked in one operation without repositioning . The 724 and 728 series vehicles were taken out of service in 1999 for various reasons: The measuring vehicles were now getting on in years, their top speed was low and often hindered regular operation. In addition, line train control had meanwhile been introduced on routes with high permissible speeds and the use of digital punctual train control was also mandatory on slower routes . However, the vehicles were no longer suitable for this new type of safety technology. Today, modern test vehicles such as the RAILab sets enable, in addition to checking all safety devices, the digital recording of all operational parameters of the track position and allow high measurement speeds. Line magnets can now be serviced by technicians using a handheld device. The Indusi measuring car of the 728 series was sold to the AKN Eisenbahn . It was painted there again in red and was given the number VT 3.07.
