As series 724 described the German Federal Railway Service Cars for testing Indusi -Streckeneinrichtungen. There were three vehicles of this series.

history

With the increasing use of inductive train control , a measuring vehicle became necessary to check the correct functioning of the line equipment. For this one was on June 21, 1963 uerdingen railbus the pre-series with the vehicle number VT retired 95 906 and in the repair shop Kassel turned into a test carriage for Indusi track facilities. The mileage of the vehicle at that time was 1,236,000 kilometers. Designated as 6205 Wt, it took up service on February 25, 1964 at the Wuppertal depot and replaced the measuring trolley that had been kept for this purpose up until then . From January 1, 1968, the railcar carried the designation 724 001-3 in the computer-readable numbering scheme .

Since inductive train control became widespread, one vehicle was soon no longer enough. In 1972 the decommissioned VT 795 144 and 471 were again converted into test vehicles at the Aw Kassel and designated as 724 002-1 and 724 003-9.

On January 18, 1986, the first of the three measuring vehicles used, 724 001, was retired from the Heidelberg depot. The vehicle was then parked on the sidings for 20 years, most recently in front of the Worms locomotive shed, and it became increasingly dilapidated. In 2007 the railcar, the last pre-series VT 95 still in existence, was acquired by the Vulkaneifelbahn and transported to Gerolstein . A restoration is to take place there in the medium term. The two other vehicles of the DB class 724, which were retired in 2000, were also retained. 724 003 was optically restored to the delivery condition as VT 95 and erected as such as a memorial in Wuppertal-Cronenberg.

technology

In the course of the conversion from the Uerdingen rail bus to the Indusi measuring car, additional work lights were installed in addition to the measuring technology and some side windows were closed. To check the safety devices, the Indusi measuring vehicles were equipped with test magnets, which were used to check the function of the track system. Initially, 724 001 only received one of these test magnets. In 1971, however, a second magnet was installed on the other side of the vehicle and the operating sequence was significantly optimized: entry and exit signals could now be checked in one operation, and the previous relocation was no longer necessary .

There were several reasons for the vehicles to be parked at the turn of the millennium: The railcars were now getting on in years, the maximum speed was low and hindered regular operations in many places, liner train control had been introduced on routes with high permissible speeds and digital ones were also used on slower routes punctual train control mandatory. However, the Indusi measuring vehicles of the 724 series were not suitable for this new type of safety technology. Today, modern test vehicles such as the RAILab sets enable, in addition to checking all safety devices, the digital recording of all operationally relevant parameters of the track position and allow high measurement speeds. In some places, however, route magnets are serviced by handheld technicians after the Indusi measuring vehicles have been parked.
