The Archaeological Society in the Rotenburg (Wümme) district is a registered association for the promotion of archaeological monument preservation in the Rotenburg (Wümme) district . The association works closely with the Rotenburg (Wümme) district archeology, which is also the headquarters of the association.

founding

It was founded in 1997 on the initiative of the then district archaeologist Wolf-Dieter Tempel (1937–2017). It took place at a meeting of personally invited people interested in archaeological research on November 17, 1997 in Zeven . The members of the Lower Saxony state parliament, Hans-Cord von Bothmer and Bodo Räke , the senior district director Gerhard Blume and several members of the Rotenburg (Wümme) district took part in the founding meeting. On April 22, 1998 the association was entered in the association register.

According to Section 1 of its statutes, the Archaeological Society promotes "[...] the archaeological [...] preservation of monuments and research in the Rotenburg (Wümme) district , including scientific and educational publications, as well as the museum presentation of research results". It pursues these goals through financial support from the Rotenburg (Wümme) district archeology or other organizations and through the implementation of its own measures. It also informs the public through lectures, excursions and the publication of its own or the promotion of other archaeological publications.

The redrawing of a bird primer from the women's grave in Anderlingen was chosen as the logo . The women's grave, with a gold-plated equal-armed fibula and two gold-plated bird fibulae, is one of the most outstanding finds in the Rotenburg (Wümme) district. They date to the 5th century AD. The burial was in the same burial mound as the stone box of otherlings .

Events

Publications

The Archaeological Society has published the archaeological reports of the Rotenburg (Wümme) district together with the district since Volume 8 (2000) and contributes to the production costs. In return, the members of the society receive it as a free annual gift when a volume is published. Both institutions are also drawing for the publication of the book Geschichtsspuren Between Wümme and Oste. 95 archaeological excursions into the central Elbe-Weser triangle by Stefan Hesse and Wolf-Dieter Tempel. In addition, the Society published the 2002 Festschrift for Wolf-Dieter Tempel and the publication On the Edge of Archeology - Encounters and Experiences by Wolf-Dieter Tempel.

The printing of publications was financed as separate projects, a website was created and the scientific processing of an archaeological collection was commissioned.
