From 1965 to 1993 , the Deutsche Bundesbahn used a tunnel measuring vehicle under the series designation 712 , which was also known as the "tunnel hedgehog" because of its characteristic appearance. In addition to mechanical measuring devices for measuring the tunnel profile, it also had a measuring pantograph with which the height of the overhead line could be measured. The vehicle was initially painted red and was repainted in the 1980s in the uniform yellow of the railway service vehicles . The railcar was converted from the VT 38 002 ( formerly DR 137 158 ) in 1965 into the "6210 Kar" tunnel test vehicle and is now in the Bochum-Dahlhausen Railway Museum .

The 712 001 has a diesel-electric drive with a low-speed gearshift.

In 1993 the 712 002 replaced the "tunnel hedgehog" with electronic profile measuring devices.
