The German Society for Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine e. V. (DGAI) is a medical society with over 15,000 (as of 2019) members. It was founded on April 10, 1953 on the occasion of the 70th annual congress of the German Society for Surgery in Munich as the German Society for Anesthesia . Richard Heinz-Joachim (Jochen) Bark (1918–1963) was the founding chairman of the German Association for Anesthesiology and the German Society for Anesthesia from 1952 to 1953. According to the articles of association, the company has set itself the task of " uniting doctors to work together on the expansion and progress of anesthesiology , intensive care medicine , emergency medicine and pain therapy and to ensure the best possible care for the population in these areas." Its aim is to further develop the subject of anesthesiology its sub-areas of anesthesia and intensive care medicine as well as emergency, pain and palliative medicine . The seat of the company is Heidelberg , and the office is located in Nuremberg . Bernhard Zwißler , director of the Clinic for Anaesthesiology at LMU Munich, was DGAI President from 2017 to 2018 . Rolf Rossaint (RWTH Aachen) has been president of the association since 2019. Vice-President of DGAI is (as of 2020) Frank Wappler, General Secretary was Bernhard Zwißler.

The association working groups on scientific and applied clinical issues one of these subject areas, develop guidelines aimed advanced training courses and conferences (insbesonderen the German Anesthesia Congress , DAC, also the Annual Meeting of the Society) and publishes the magazine A & I - Anesthesiology & Intensive Care out , the official organ of the DGAI, the professional association of German anesthetists e. V. (BDA) and the German Academy for Anesthesiological Training e. V. (DAAF) as well as organ of the German Interdisciplinary Association for Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine e. V. (DIVI). In addition, she (together with the BDA) represents the interests of the members vis-à-vis various institutions such as ministries, authorities, medical associations and associations and carries out public relations work for the professional profile of the anesthetist. As a European specialist society, it supports the Helsinki Declaration on Patient Safety in Anesthesiology .

In addition to the federal association, there are 17 regional associations. The society is a member of the World Federation of Societies of Anesthesiologists (WFSA), which is an amalgamation of national anesthesia professional associations, the European Society of Anesthesiology (ESA) and a member of the Association of Scientific Medical Societies (AWMF).

On December 31, 2019, the 26-year activity of the social economist Holger Sorgatz as managing director of DGAI and BDA ended. He is replaced by Tina Rhaiem. A. Schleppers is in charge of the office.

On January 1, 2020, the long-time secretary of the company, Bernhard Zwißler, took over the office of Secretary General from Hugo Van Aken . Zwißler was Vice President of the DGAI in 2016 and 2019 and President from 2017–2018.

Awards by the DGAI

The prize donated by the former Society for Anaesthesiology and Intensive Therapy (GAIT) of the GDR in honor of Heinrich Braun (medical doctor, 1862) is awarded as the highest medal.

Furthermore, the medal in honor of Franz Kuhn will be retained, and a medal in memory of Rudolf Frey will also be awarded for services in emergency medicine .

A memorial lecture named after Hellmut Weese will be held at the opening of the annual conference (DAC) .
