DJ SS , civic Leroy Small (* 27. August 1970 in Leicester , England ) is a British drum-and-bass - DJ and - producer . His stage name stands for "Scratchenstein".

Life

According to the Rough Guide , he shaped the hardcore and hardstep genre decisively. Along with Ray Keith , Dillinja and Shy FX , he is one of the prototypical representatives of hardstep. From the beginning hardcore scene of the early nineties, he was one of the few who survived for several years and was recognized as an artist within the jungle scene over time .

Small and his partner Eidris held a series of Friday night parties in Leicester in 1991 under the name Total Kaos. They also organized one of the largest indoor events in the emerging British hardcore scene at the time : in Donington Park, with 6,000 guests. Small gained a foothold in the scene right from the start of the British Hardcore, Jungle and Drum and Bass movement and quickly gained popularity.

His first release, the EP The Psycho on Formation Records, shaped the defining elements of the hardcore blueprint: crunchy breakbeats and synth riffs that were reminiscent of alarm sirens. While in the 1980 / 1990s the jungle scene was more oriented towards melody, DJ SS, along with Asend , Deep Blue , Aphrodite and DJ Hype, belonged to the younger generation who put the emphasis on percussion and beats.
