The DKW P 15 PS is a small car from the DKW brand , which the motorcycle factory Zschopauer Motorenwerke JS Rasmussen presented as their first car in May 1928. The light car with a water- cooled motorcycle engine and rear-wheel drive was designed by Rudolf Slaby , the former owner of the Berlin Slaby-Beringer-Automobil-Gesellschaft , which Rasmussen had taken over in 1924. The two-cylinder two - stroke engine with thermosiphon cooling was manufactured by the DKW parent plant in Zschopau ; the assembly took place in Rasmussen's branch in Berlin-Spandau .
The front mounted engine with 0.6 liter displacement delivers 15 hp (11 kW) at 3500 min -1 of the carriage with a self-supporting body made of plywood with leatherette cover has front and rear rigid axles with transverse leaf springs and was as two-, three- or four-seat convertible , or Roadster available. The three-speed gearbox is operated via a shift lever in the middle of the car. The cable-operated mechanical foot brake acts on all four wheels; the parking brake on the left front and right rear wheels.
With the loud and uncomfortable two-stroke engine, the car was more interesting for those who switched from motorcycles and was not seen as a competitor model to other small cars. In addition, the wooden body was not very durable and rotted quickly, the consumption of two-stroke mixture was comparatively high, as was the wear on spark plugs . After 3008 cars, production was stopped in 1929. As early as November 1928, the larger successor, the P 25 HP, with a four -cylinder two - stroke V-engine and two charge pumps was presented. The DKW 4 = 8 were as V 800 / V 1000 , special class or suspension class in the DKW offer until 1940.
Based on the P 15 PS, the DKW PS 600 Sport came onto the market in 1930 with an engine boosted to 18 PS. The elegant roadster with a boat stern was discontinued in 1931 without replacement.
