The DKW F5 was a small , front-wheel drive car from the DKW brand , which Auto Union launched in February 1935 as the successor to the F2 and F4 models . The changes in appearance were minimal compared to its predecessors, but the F5 now had a central box frame made entirely of steel instead of the subframe made of two steel U-profile longitudinal members as the chassis. The independent suspension on transverse leaf springs was implemented at the rear as a " floating axis " by raising the transverse leaf spring . Like all DKW “Frontwagen” (protected name), the DKW F5 was built in the Audi factory in Zwickau .

The already in the F2 master class 701 used and forward transversely mounted two-cylinder - two-stroke engine ( parallel twin ) is Schnürle - reverse circulation provided and two overflow channels. The engines developed 18 hp in the Reichsklasse with a displacement of 0.6 liters and 20 hp in the master class with a displacement of 0.7 liters. It drives the front wheels via a three-speed gearbox with a stick gear lever. As with its predecessors, the new box frame was fitted with plywood bodies covered with artificial leather , which were manufactured in the DKW plant in Berlin-Spandau . The Reich and Meisterklasse were available as two-door sedans or convertible sedans.

In 1936, full convertibles of both types were offered. From the 600 cc Reichsklasse there was a two-seater with a shorter wheelbase, the DKW Front two-seater F5K 600 , and from the 700 cc master class there was a two-seater and a four-seater with the designation DKW Front Luxus Cabriolet F5 700 . There was also a two-seater roadster with a shorter wheelbase than the DKW Front Luxus Sport F5K 700 . In the front luxury sports cars , the typical DKW plywood frame body was clad with sheet metal instead of synthetic leather. Due to the great demand, the bodies of the front luxury models were also manufactured by Hornig in Meerane .

Production of sedans ended as early as 1936, and sports cars in 1937. A total of 74,995 cars (including 16,154 master class convertible sedans) and 3,085 front luxury convertibles were built before the successor DKW F7 appeared.
