South of La Vega

The DR-1 begins in the center of Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic. It leads out in a north-westerly direction of the city; in town it was named after John F. Kennedy . Outside the city it is known as the Autopista Duarte. The first major city is Bonao , the route leads past the northeastern outskirts. The next town is Concepción de la Vega , or La Vega for short, this is also bypassed to the northeast. In contrast, the route leads through the following city, Santiago de los Caballeros , the second largest city in the Dominican Republic. However, there is also a bypass here that can be used as an alternative. The route continues to Bisonó in a westerly direction. In San Fernando de Monte Cristi it ends in the town center.

history

The route is one of the oldest roads in the Dominican Republic. Construction of the original road began in 1917; it was completed in 1922. The multi-lane expansion was completed by 1997.
