The Amsterdamsche Football Club DWS is a Dutch football club from Amsterdam .

history

The association was founded in 1907 as Fortuna , was soon called Heracles and from 1909 DWS. The abbreviation stands for Door Wilskracht Sterk (Strong willpower). In the 1934/35 season DWS reached the championship in the Eerste class for the first time (Group West II), but failed in the championship finals, among other things, at the victorious Eindhoven PSV . In 1958 DWS merged with BVC Amsterdam and was initially called DWS / A ; the merger club took over BVC's place in the Eredivisie . In 1962 the name was changed to Amsterdamsche FC DWS (AFCDWS) , briefly again DWS. The greatest success was achieved in 1964 when the team became Dutch champions and then advanced to the quarter-finals in the European championship . There you had to Győri ETO Vasas from Hungary to admit defeat. In the following season , the AFC was able to reach the runner-up.

Since the professional division merged with Blauw Wit Amsterdam in 1972 to form FC Amsterdam , which was joined by the professional division of De Volewijckers for the 1973/74 season, the DWS has only played in the amateur field. In the 2018/19 season, the Amstelstädter competed in the six-class Tweede class .
