The Dark Comedy Down in Heaven tells the story of six men who unsuspectingly accept an invitation to a party. The men, who could not be more different from age to faith, partly know each other and yet do not know who is the initiator of the meeting. The door closes behind them and they are locked up. Nobody knows how and if they will get out again.
A written message tells them that they are part of a therapeutic intervention and that they have to fulfill tasks in order to have a chance to regain their freedom. The execution or refusal of the tasks is monitored by a camera. Resistance seems pointless, and the search of each individual for his or her identity and position in the group and at the same time in today's society begins.
Due to the tightness of the space and the most varied of lifestyles, which range from “Start Up Mogul” to “chosen homeless”, there are always conflicts. Above all, widely diverging ideas of masculinity collide. Is the man a testosterone-driven monster or a slave to the national historical construct of masculinity? All six men gradually set out and reach the limits of their transparency. But that is exactly what the intervention aims at. Men have to open up and present their problems in order to have a chance at freedom. The question of whether they will find the courage to do so remains open until the end.
