Salvador "Dado" Marino (born October 15, 1915 in Maui , Hawaii , United States , † October 28, 1989 ) was an American boxer of Hawaiian descent. He was world champion of professional flyweight boxers .

Career

Dado Marino lived in Honolulu, Hawaii. Nothing is known about his amateur days as a boxer. On June 20, 1941, at the age of almost 26, he fought his first professional fight in Honolulu. From this point on he played a total of 41 fights, mostly bantamweight or even featherweight, against Hawaiians or opponents from East Asia, of which he won 35.

On May 3, 1943, he fought in Honolulu in bantamweight against the Hawaiian David Kui Kong Young and lost this fight by technical knockout in the eighth round. It was a world championship fight, but only recognized as such by the Territorial Boxing Commission. The “official” world champion of the NBA in bantamweight at that time was the American Manuel Ortiz . On April 29, 1929, Dado Marino won the Hawaiian flyweight championship in Honolulu with a point win after twelve rounds over Alfredo Chavez. That was his first title win as a professional boxer.

On July 16, 1947, Dado Marino was to box in Glasgow , UK, against the British defending champion Jackie Patterson for the NBA world flyweight title. Jackie Patterson did not appear in this fight because of weight problems. Instead of against Patterson, Dado Marino boxed against the British Rinty Monaghan in a non-title fight that day . He won it against Monaghan by disqualification in the ninth round. On August 8, 1947, he lost in Manchester , UK, again in a non-title fight against flyweight ex-world champion Peter Kane from Liverpool, UK, after ten rounds on points. On October 20, 1947, Dado Marino got the chance in Harringay , UK, against Rinty Monaghan for the vacant flyweight world title, which Jackie Patterson had been denied by the NBA to box. He lost this fight after 15 rounds on points.

On March 1, 1949, Dado Marino boxed in Honolulu against Manuel Ortiz, who was still NBA bantamweight world champion, as a challenger for the same title. But he lost after 15 rounds on points. On September 16, 1949 he boxed in Manila against Tirso Del Rosario from the Philippines for the East Asian featherweight championship. He was unlucky in this fight and had to be taken out of the fight in the fifth round due to a gaping eyebrow injury (cut).

On August 1, 1950, Dado Marino reached his great goal. On that day in Honolulu he defeated the Englishman Terry Allen after 15 rounds clearly on points and thus became NBA world flyweight champion. In the meantime he had grown up in Japan with Yoshio Shirai, a new strong competitor for this title. On May 21, 1951 there was a fight between Dado Marino and Yoshio Shirai at the Korakuen baseball stadium in Tokyo in front of 35,000 spectators, which Marino won after ten rounds on points. However, this fight took place in the bantamweight division and was not approved by the NBA Boxing Commission as a world championship fight because Dado Marino had to defend his newly won world title against Terry Allen due to a rematch clause.

This fight then took place on November 1, 1951 in Honolulu and Dado Marino defeated Terry Allen again unanimously on points. On December 4, 1951, Dado Marino and Yoshio Shirai fought each other again in Honolulu. But this fight was again not about the world championship title. Marino lost this fight by technical knockout in the seventh round. In the previous rounds he had been knocked down six times by Shirai. On May 9, 1952, Dado Marino's title defense against Yoshio Shirai took place in Tokyo , this time in front of 40,000 spectators. Shirai won this fight after 15 rounds clearly on points and was the new NBA flyweight world champion. On November 15, 1952, there was another world championship match between Marino and Shirai in Tokyo, which Shirai won again on points after 15 rounds.

After this fight, Dado Marino ended his boxing career.
