Career

"Rinty" Monaghan, whose full name was John Joseph Monaghan, lived in Belfast all his life. He attended school there, where he also started boxing. He played his first professional fights very early on. Of the 69 fights he fought, he completed 68 in the British Isles and one in Ireland. During the Second World War he was drafted. During these years he played only a few fights and often appeared as a part-time cabaret artist. It only became really successful after World War II. His manager was then Frank McAloren. In 1950 he had to give up his career as a boxer for health reasons.

Career as a professional boxer

Rinty Monaghan fought his first fight on April 13, 1932 in Belfast and came in flyweight to a point victory after 4 rounds over his compatriot Sam Ramsey. In the following years he slowly fought his way up with skill and perseverance. On May 1, 1937, he lost a fight for the first time in Belfast. He suffered a point defeat there against Jim Keery. On July 23, 1938 he lost in Belfast against the Scots Jackie Patterson by knockout in the 5th round. That was his first knockout defeat that he had to accept in his career. He later fought several hard fights against Jackie Patterson.

On November 6, 1945 he won in Belfast with a knockout victory in the 4th round over Bunty Doran the Northern Irish flyweight championship (British Boxing Board of Control Northern Ireland Area Flyweight Title). That was the first championship title he won. Then he boxed himself with victories over such strong opponents as Jackie Patterson, Terry Allen (boxer) and Emile Famechon a top position in the world rankings. On July 16, 1947, however, he was defeated in Glasgow, United Kingdom, against the Hawaiian Dado Marino by disqualification in the 9th round. It then came on October 20, 1947 in Harringay, United Kingdom, between the two boxers for revenge, in which it came to the vacant NBA world flyweight title. Rinty Monaghan won this fight after 15 rounds on points and became world champion.

On March 23, 1948 Rinty Monaghan defended his world title in Belfast by knocking out Jackie Patterson in the 7th round. In this fight he also won the British championship and the Commonwealth (British Empire) championship. On April 5, 1949 in Belfast he also won the EBU European flyweight title with a point victory after 15 rounds over the Frenchman Maurice Sandeyron . After this victory, he held the four most important titles in professional flyweight boxing. On September 30, 1949, Rinty Monaghan defended these four titles in Belfast against Terry Allen, a much younger Englishman, by a "draw" after 15 rounds successfully.

In April 1950, Rinty Monaghan had to give up his career as a boxer for health reasons and return all titles without a fight.
