Damodaram Sanjivayya

Damodaram Sanjivayya ( Telugu : దామోదరం సంజీవయ్య ; * February 14, 1921 in Peddapadu, Kallur Mandal, Kurnool District , Andhra Pradesh , British India ; † March 8, 1972 ) was an Indian politician of the Indian National Congress (INC) who, among other things, between 1960 and 1962 Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh and Minister in various Union governments.

Life

Damodaram Sanjivayya, son of Damodaram Muneyya, first completed an undergraduate degree after attending school , which he completed with a Bachelor of Arts (BA). A postgraduate studies of law at the Law College of the University of Madras , he finished with a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) and took a job as a subsequent attorney on. He began his political career after India gained independence from the United Kingdom on August 15, 1947 when he became a member of the Provisional Parliament of Madras State in 1950 . After he was briefly a member of the legislative assembly of the state of Madras in 1952, he became a member of the legislative assembly of the newly created state in 1953 and then between 1956 and 1964 a member of the legislative assembly of the now federal state Andhra Pradesh . He was also a Minister in the governments of these states from 1952 to 1960. On January 11, 1960, he finally took over as the successor to Neelam Sanjiva Reddy himself as Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh and held this until March 11, 1962, whereupon Neelam Sanjiva Reddy was again his successor.

In 1962, Sanjivayya, a descendant of the Indian natives ( Adivasi ) , became the first Dalit President of the Presidium of the INC (All India Congress Committee) and held this office until 1964. On April 3, 1964 he became a member of the Rajya Sabha , the upper house of the Indian Parliament (Bhāratīya saṃsa) , and was a member of this until his death on March 8, 1972. Shortly thereafter, on June 9, 1964, he became Minister of Labor and Employment in the cabinet of Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri and held this office until January 23, 1966. In the following first cabinet of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi , he took over the office of Minister of Industry on January 24, 1966, which he held until March 12, 1967. As part of a recent cabinet reshuffle, he succeeded Jagjivan Ram as Minister of Labor and Rehabilitation on February 17, 1970, and held this position until March 18, 1971.

He was married to Shrimati Krishnaveni Sanjivayya. The Sanjeevaiah Park in Hyderabad and the Damodaram Sanjivayya National Law University (DSNLU) in Visakhapatnam , founded in 2008, were named in his honor.
