Dan Kolow , actually Dontscho Kolew Denew ( Bulgarian Дан Колов ; born December 26, 1892 in Sennik , † March 26, 1940 in Gabrovo ) was a Bulgarian wrestler .

Life

Born in Bulgaria, Dan Kolow immigrated to the USA at the age of 17 and became a successful professional wrestler there. After learning to wrestle as an autodidact , he was trained by Zbyszko Cyganiewicz . In total, he completed at least 115 professional fights of which he won 48, 47 lost in 20 ties. He was the first wrestler who managed the Diamond Belt heavyweight professional wrestler to win twice. In the 1930s he was three times European heavyweight champion.

Dan Kolow returned to Bulgaria after the end of his professional career and was received there as a national hero. There he was very committed to charity, organized competitions and donated the proceeds. The first Bulgarian passenger plane was purchased with his support. He also participated to a considerable extent in the financing of the defense of Georgi Dimitrov in the Reichstag fire trial .

Dan Kolow died of tuberculosis in 1940 . He was buried with military honors.

Every year a wrestling competition in his honor takes place in Sofia with the Dan Kolow & Nikoa Petrow Memorial . In 1999 his life was filmed in the Bulgarian film Dan Kolov - tzaryat na kecha . In the television show Welikite Balgari in 2006, Kolov was voted 31st among the largest Bulgarians by Bulgarian television viewers.
