Daniel A. Sullivan (* 16th June 1951 in Fairbanks , Alaska Territory ) is an American politician of the Republican Party . He was Mayor of Anchorage , the largest city in the state of Alaska , from 2009 to 2015 .

Life

Dan Sullivan is the son of George Sullivan and his wife Margaret Mary Eagan and grew up with eight other siblings in Fairbanks. The family moved to Anchorage in 1959 after George Sullivan was employed by a logistics company there. Sullivan studied political science at the University of Oregon . 1999 Sullivan was in the city council elected by Anchorage. During this time he was involved in a regulation that required lobbyists to disclose their affiliations before joining the city council. This was in response to lobbying by Tom Anderson, who was a member of the Alaska House of Representatives .

In 2007, Dan Sullivan announced his candidacy for Anchorage mayor for the 2009 mayoral election. For this he was approved by Ted Stevens , who at the time was sitting in the House of Representatives for Alaska . In his election campaign, Sullivan advocated reducing crime in Anchorage and lowering urban spending. In the April 7, 2009 election, Sullivan did not get the required absolute majority . In the runoff election on May 5, 2009, he prevailed with 57.3 percent of the vote against his competitor Eric Croft. On July 1, 2009, he replaced Mark Begich as Mayor of Anchorage. In April 2012, Sullivan was re-elected.

In 2013, Dan Sullivan ran unsuccessfully for lieutenant governor of Alaska after Mead Treadwell ran for the office of US senator. In 2015 he did not run for the mayoral election in Anchorage and was replaced by Ethan Berkowitz . On June 1, 2016, he announced that he was running for the office of U.S. Senator for the state of Alaska. On June 16, 2016, he withdrew this application without giving a reason.

Sullivan is married with one daughter. He and a business partner have been running a pub in downtown Anchorage since 2006.
