Daniel Heartz
Daniel Leonard Heartz (born October 5, 1928 in Exeter , New Hampshire , † November 24, 2019 in Berkeley ) was an American musicologist . He was a professor at the University of California, Berkeley , last retired .
Heartz studied at the University of New Hampshire ( Bachelor 1950) and Otto Gombosi , Tillman Merritt and John Ward at Harvard University ( Master 1952), where he with the work in 1957 Forms of the French Instrumental Dance in the Sixteenth Century doctorate . First he was a lecturer, then an assistant professor at the University of Chicago , from 1960 professor at the University of California, Berkeley . He was chairman of the musicology department there from 1969 to 1973 .
Heartz dealt primarily with Renaissance music , later with the opera of the 18th century . His most important publications include Forms of the French Instrumental Dance in the Sixteenth Century (1969), Mozart's Operas (1990) and Haydn, Mozart and the Viennese School 1740–1780 (1995). He was also editor of Preludes, Chansons, and Dances for Lute, Published by P. Attaingnant, Paris (1529–1530) (1964) and Keyboard Dances of the Earlier Sixteenth Century (1965).
Heartz was a Guggenheim Fellow in 1967 and 1978 . In 1988 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . In 2000 he became an honorary member of the American Musicological Society .
