Daniel Peter
Daniel Peter (born March 9, 1836 in Moudon ; † November 4, 1919 in Vevey ) was a Swiss chocolatier and entrepreneur . He is considered to be the inventor of milk chocolate .
Life
The son of a butcher completed an apprenticeship in the grocery trade in 1852 and later in an artisanal candle factory in Vevey . Together with his brother he bought and operated this factory a few years later, but had little commercial success due to the increasing displacement of candles by petroleum lamps . In 1863 he married Fanny-Louise Cailler, the eldest daughter of the chocolate entrepreneur François-Louis Cailler, and so came to chocolate .
In 1867 he founded Peter-Cailler et Compagnie . Business was bad, and with the help of his friend Henri Nestlé and his milk powder , he tried to create a new product: the combination of milk and chocolate. After years of research, he gave up the idea of powdered milk in 1873 and tried condensed milk . In 1875 he finally developed a chocolate made of cocoa , sugar and condensed milk, which was a great success with the public: in many publications, this is still considered the date of the invention of milk chocolate, with the first milk chocolate being produced in Dresden in 1839. In 1887, a refined milk chocolate was launched under the brand name Gala Peter.
In 1901 Peter built the factory in Orbe that still exists today . In 1904 Peter-Cailler et Compagnie merged with Kohler, and in 1911 the two teamed up with Cailler in order to be able to survive on the international markets. The combination of Kohler's hazelnut with Peter's milk chocolate sold excellently with the armies of the warring parties involved in World War I , but the remaining export markets collapsed.
Daniel Peter and Fanny Cailler (1838–1918) had 5 children together: Louise, François, Rose, Jeanne and Elisa.
