Daniel Ridgway Knight (born March 15, 1839 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania , † March 9, 1924 in Paris ) was an American painter.

Life

Knight came to Paris and studied at the École des Beaux-Arts a . a. Student of Charles Gleyre and Alexandre Cabanel . He later moved to Ernest Meissonier's studio as a master student .

When the political situation ( Franco-German War ) normalized again in 1872 , Knight settled in Poissy ( Yvelines department ) and also founded a studio there. He was friends at this time and a. with Claude Monet , Auguste Renoir and Alfred Sisley .

In 1863 he went back to the United States and settled again in Philadelphia. When the situation returned to normal after the Franco-Prussian War, Knight returned to Paris. Through his friend and colleague Jean-François Millet , he made the acquaintance of the Barbizon School and its representatives in 1874 .

In 1883 Knight settled in Rolleboise (Yvelines department) and opened a large atelier there. After he had successfully participated in the annual exhibitions of the Salon de Paris several times , he was invited in 1889 - together with his friend and colleague Pierre Carrier-Belleuse  - to take part in the world exhibition in his hometown.

Six days before his 85th birthday, Knight died on March 9, 1924 in Paris, where he found his final resting place.

The landscape painter Louis Aston Knight (1873–1948) was his son.
