Daniel Sambo-Richter (* 1966 in Görlitz as Daniel Richter ) is a German painter and sculptor .

Life

Daniel Sambo-Richter grew up in Cottbus . At the same time as an apprenticeship as a craftsman, he completed studies in painting and graphics at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts with Hans Scheuerecker and Uli Richter in Cottbus from 1982–85 . Because of his application to leave the country and probably also because he belonged to the punk scene in the GDR at the time, his application to study painting at the academy was rejected in 1986. In 1994 he received a grant from the Käthe Dorsch Foundation, Berlin . 1996 followed a scholarship and work stay of the Sparkassen-Kulturstiftung Hessen-Thüringen at the Künstlerhaus Willingshausen; he was also awarded the Brandenburg State Art Prize in 1996. In 1998 he received a working grant from the Berlin Cultural Fund Foundation. 2000 followed a scholarship and work stay at the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts, Omaha, Nebraska / USA, as well as another working scholarship from the state of Brandenburg.

Daniel Sambo-Richter lives in Berlin, he is married to the artist Manuela Sambo .

In the 1990s, Sambo-Richter's attention was drawn to abstract art in drawings and lacquer paintings, but also to large-scale installations . Since around 2005 he has increasingly turned to figurative painting with extensive series of fictional portraits. With the help of his special portrait technique, which ties in with the naturalistic formal language of the early 20th century, he opens up - as in a journey through time - a seemingly contemporary look at personalities of the thirties, including his own grandfather, the Resistance Pastor Paul Richter , who im Dachau concentration camp was killed. Sambo-Richter approaches the topic of totalitarianism in an ambivalent and sometimes disturbing way, as in the portrayal of Leni Riefenstahl, who was admired by the Nazis (and far beyond their circles), or of the “icon” of the German resistance, Claus, who was murdered by them Gift of Count von Stauffenberg . Stimulated by this, he then begins to work on the complex of the warlike man. Extensive series with depictions of soldiers, military personnel, child soldiers and war nurses determine his work to this day. At the same time, he works with the classic subject of landscape painting, which he understands as a mirror of an emotional / psychological image of human society. Burning forests characterize his landscapes as well as melting glaciers and icebergs. Among other things, he dedicates himself to the topic of dictatorship in the series Secretary General, a graphic discussion with the head of state of the GDR Erich Honecker. Here, too, power, powerlessness and opportunism are the central themes of his artistic work.
