Life
Daniel Sambursky, the brother of the physicist Shmuel Sambursky , grew up in a Zionist family. His parents had emigrated from Russia to Koenigsberg, his father Menachem Emanuel Sambursky (1866–1934) wrote for the Hebrew newspaper Ha-Zefira . Daniel Sambursky studied music at the Gdansk Conservatory and began studying medicine at Berlin's Humboldt University . In Berlin, Hanns Eisler's political commitment to the proletarian revolution became a guideline for Sambursky. In the early 1930s he joined the left-wing Zionist group Barak in the German capital .
In 1932 he emigrated to Palestine and until 1948 was a music teacher at grammar schools in Tel Aviv. He composed numerous song melodies, including for the Hagana unit FO'SH , based on texts by Nathan Alterman , Jizchak Schenhar , Levin Kipnis and Chaim Nachman Bialik . After the establishment of the State of Israel , Sambursky continued to work as a music teacher and organized the country's first communal singing events , called Shira betzibur ("singing in the community") in Israel . Many of his songs are still popular today, including Shir haemek from 1934 (“Song of the Valley”, meaning Emek Jizre'el , lyrics: Nathan Alterman). This song, with the initial words Ba'a M'nucha , found its way into the Evangelical Hymnbook (No. 489) as Enter into Your Peace .
Sambursky died in Tel Aviv in 1977 and was buried in the Kiryat Shaul cemetery. In the Tel Aviv district of Azorei Chen , a street was named after Daniel Sambursky.
