Daniel Schillock

Daniel G. Schillock (actually Schillockatis ) (* 1826 near Kaukehmen , Niederung district , East Prussia ; † August 17, 1878 in Minneapolis ) was a German lawyer and senator in Minnesota.

Life

Born into a farming family in Prussian Lithuania , Schillock learned the German language in the village school. After graduating from the Tilsiter Realgymnasium in autumn 1845, he studied law at the Albertus University in Königsberg . In 1846 he (like many Tilsiters) became a member of the Corps Littuania . After passing his exams and training as an auscultator , he emigrated to the USA. After several years in Texas , Boston and Wisconsin , he settled as a lawyer in New Ulm (Minnesota) in 1858 . In 1862 he was wounded in the Sioux uprising . Elected to the Minnesota Senate that same year , he was considered the most capable senator and incorruptible representative. He fought against the railway monopoly, for social progress and German instruction in elementary schools . His hearing impairment prevented much further advancement. After his term in office , he moved to Minneapolis in 1868 . He died of a stroke at the age of 52 .
