The Tilsiter Realgymnasium was a Realgymnasium in Tilsit , the northernmost city of the German Empire . Besides the Royal Provincial School of Lithuania , it was the most important school in Prussian Lithuania .

history

The establishment of a secondary school in Tilsit was decided in 1838. It corresponded to the economic interests of the educated middle class. Tilsit had about 13,700 inhabitants in 1843. The school was municipal until 1879. It initially had four classes with five teachers. The school on Schulstrasse opened on October 30, 1839. At that time it had only 32 students in three grades , Quinta, Quarta, Tertia. The number of students tripled in the first half of the winter. Further classes were added, the Prima in 1843. In July 1843, the school was granted the right to take the final exams . In October 1843 the first high school graduate left school. Little by little, equality with the humanistic grammar school was achieved. More Latin had to be taught for this. The high school graduates, later the secondary school leavers, were allowed to serve as one-year volunteers in the Prussian army and study surgery or dentistry. The questions of the Realschule became the subject of negotiations in the provincial parliament . A major step forward was the upgrading to secondary school in 1860. In 1879 it was taken over into the administration of the Prussian state and in 1882 it was renamed a secondary school with an expanded curriculum. This gave it the same rank as the provincial school. Because of the rivalry, Latin remained the most favored subject. In 1882 the weekly schedule provided for the following lessons : Latin 54 instead of 44, mathematics 44 instead of 47, history and geography 30, natural sciences 34 in total, French 34, German 27, English 20, religion 19. In addition, there were writing, drawing, singing and two gymnastics hours a week for each of the nine classes. The curriculum around 1910 was not significantly different.

New building

The old house on Schulstrasse had long been too narrow. A new house was built across the Schlossmühlenteich and was inaugurated on April 3, 1913. From then on, this house housed two connected schools: the Realgymnasium, which was converted into a reform grammar school , and an Oberrealschule . Both schools started with French Sp and had the same curriculum until Quarta. This was followed by the lower secondary school in Latin Realgymnasium, and English at the Oberrealschule, which completely renounced Latin. This clearly rejected the old grammar school. It was lapped in number of students. In 1912 55% of the high school students attended the Realgymnasien and Oberrealschulen, 45% the grammar schools. In this condition, the Realgymnasium went into the First World War . Many students fell. The interwar period brought further cuts and changes. The annual reports in the school programs are only partially preserved.

classes

Two types of school were now competing in the same building: Realgymnasium and Oberrealschule. Until 1929, the high school students predominated among the high school graduates. In 1930 20 high school graduates each left the Realgymnasium and the Oberrealschule. For the first time in 1931, the upper secondary school graduates slightly outnumbered (26:24). Science was everywhere in the curriculum. The Oberrealschule was the type of progress, the Realgymnasium a good mediation between old and new. The languages were characteristic. In 1925, English became the first foreign language, French followed as the second in the lower secondary level, and Latin was only taught in the secondary school from the lower secondary level. Both schools were the same up to Obertertia. The high school set the tone. Political life, not dead even before 1914, was activated. In the course of democratization , a parents' council and (sporting) school clubs, including a Jewish one, were set up. In 1937 the school was renamed a high school for boys.

The End

In the summer of 1944, classes were suspended. Most of the school burned down on July 27th. The deputy director and his secretary worked in the ruin until October 15, 1944 to handle the administration. At that time, Tilsit was already in the main battle line . The Red Army was on the other side of the Memel . The conquest of Tilsit in 1945 marked the end of the school. The surviving students and teachers founded a traditional community in 1951. The Hebbelschule (Kiel) took over a sponsorship in 1958. There, in September 1989, the 150th founding ceremony of the Tilsiter Realgymnasium was celebrated.
