The Hebbelschule is a high school in Kiel . It has the status of a European school .

history

The Hebbelschule was founded in 1903 as the " Oberrealschule an der Waitzstrasse". The new school, however, went back to a secondary school founded in 1897, which was initially located on Brunswiker Straße and finally moved to a new building on Waitzstraße in 1902 due to lack of space. The establishment of the Realschule had become necessary because the only upper secondary school in Kiel on Knooper Weg had reached its capacity limit and a further increase in demand was to be expected in the course of the rapid population growth. When, after a few years, the new Realschule was fully utilized and capacities were also required in the area of higher schools, the city of Kiel decided to convert it into an Oberrealschule, which was carried out in 1903. Already in 1904 the first high school graduates could be passed. With the establishment of another secondary school on Königsweg, the school became “Oberrealschule I on Waitzstrasse” in 1907. In contrast to the other higher schools, a large part of the student body came from officer's and civil servants' households in the first decades of the school's history.

In 1922, the upper secondary school was renamed again at its own request and was now called "Hebbel School". After the reform of the secondary schools in Prussia, reform high school classes were set up in 1926, so that Latin was now also taught as a foreign language. The takeover of power by the National Socialists did not remain without consequences for the Hebbelschule and led to the dismissal of the previous, democratically minded headmaster Dr. Franz, whose office a year later the party comrade Dr. Grosch took over. In the course of the uniform school reform in the Reich, the Hebbelschule became a secondary school in 1938, like almost all other higher schools. Due to the special importance of Kiel for the navy and the high risk of air raids, the Second World War not only brought profound disruptions to teaching, but also led to the extensive destruction of the school building in January 1944.

After the end of the war, the lessons took place provisionally in the building of the secondary school for girls on Ravensberg, until the new building on Feldstrasse was finally ready in 1958. Since 1955 the Hebbelschule has also been called the Gymnasium. In the years and decades that followed, everyday school life normalized and, apart from the usual range of subjects, the Hebbelschule was able to distinguish itself primarily with the performances of the school's own theater group, later a drama course. Since 1971, girls have also been admitted as part of co-education. As a further profile feature, the Hebbelschule was awarded the status of a European school in 1996, which was reflected, among other things, in an expanded foreign language and student exchange program.

offer

Since the introduction of the upper profile level in Schleswig-Holstein in 2008, the Hebbelschule has offered three profiles: a linguistic, a social and a scientific profile. The business internship in the upper level can optionally be completed in another European country (Nice, Bilbao).

The Hebbelschule offers a wide range of working groups as part of the open all-day school. After the course system was replaced, the theater group regained the status of a working group, but it can look back on a long history going back to the 1920s. The ORRC Neptun has also existed as the school's own rowing club since 1907.

For over 20 years, students at the Hebbelschule have regularly participated in Europe-wide Comenius projects. The aim is cross-border and cross-cultural learning and working on common topics as well as personal exchange with one another.

The school building , which was moved into in 1958 and is now a listed building, is surrounded by a green zone just a few hundred meters from the Kiel Fjord . The school auditorium with stage is the largest in Schleswig-Holstein.
