Danny Oakes

Daniel "Danny" Oakes (born July 18, 1911 in Santa Barbara , California , † January 13, 2007 in Huntington Beach , California) was an American racing car driver .

Career

Oakes was one of the most successful midget car drivers in California in the 1940s. He began driving midget races in the 1930s and won various championships including three Pacific Coast championships , the 1947 AAA Midget championships and the 1959 Pacific Coast USAC championships .

Between 1952 and 1954 he started in six races for the AAA National Series , in which he could never classify himself better than eleventh place. During the same period, he made three unsuccessful attempts to qualify for the Indianapolis 500 .

He later worked as a racing mechanic in Indianapolis for Jim Hurtubise, among others .
