The Dansk Spejderkorps Sydslesvig (DSS, Danish Scout Corps in South Schleswig ) is the scout association of the Danish minority living in South Schleswig . The co-educational association, founded in 1919, had around 680 members in 12 groups in 2007.

aims

The aim of the association is to educate children and adolescents from the Danish population group in independence , a sense of responsibility , a basic democratic attitude and international understanding; the boy scout method is used for this.

history

The Dansk Spejderkorps Sydslesvig was founded on August 10, 1919. Since it was already accepting groups of boys and girls back then, it was the first co-educational scout association in Germany. In addition, the DSS is the only scout association that was not banned or dissolved during the time of National Socialism , as members of the Danish minority were exempt from compulsory membership in Nazi organizations and the DSS was therefore not viewed as competition to the Hitler Youth .

Until after the Second World War , the DSS was closely associated with the Danish Det Danske Spejderkorps (DDS) and was treated as part of this association, although the DDS in Denmark only accepted boys until 1973. It was not until the 1950s that the DSS broke away from the Danish association and became independent; at the same time it became a member of the Association of German Scouts ; this membership has been transferred to the Association of Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts .

In 1963 the association acquired Spejdergården Tydal in Eggebek as the association center. In the following years the facilities there were redesigned, in 1979 a museum on the history of the DSS was opened there.

Involvement

Via the Danish umbrella organizations Fællesrådet for Danmarks Drengespejdere and Pigespejdernes Fællesråd Danmark , the DSS is a member of the World Organization of the Scout Movement and the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts . At the same time, it is the affiliation of the Schleswig-Holstein / Hamburg regional association in the Association of Boy Scouts, which is also a member of both world associations through the Ring of German Scout Associations and the Ring of German Scout Associations.

There is also membership in the Danish youth organizations in South Schleswig , the umbrella organization of the Danish youth organizations in South Schleswig.

structure

The DSS is divided into local groups, which in turn consist of small groups of the individual age groups. All groups are led by volunteer group leaders. In addition to the “classic” local groups, a scout orchestra in Schleswig is part of the DSS.

According to its order, there are four age groups in the DSS, plus the leaders. Various groups have switched one or more additional levels before these official levels in order to enable offers for younger children or to shorten the length of stay within a level.

Facilities

The association maintains the 75 hectare Spejdergården Tydal in Eggebek as the association center. In addition to self-catering houses with around 80 beds and tent spaces for 800 people, the DSS museum is also located there. The Sydslesvigs Spejderfond supports the scout work.
