Dantewada ( Hindi : दंतेवाड़ा , Dantevāṛā ) is a small town in the Indian state of Chhattisgarh .

The city had 13,633 inhabitants at the 2011 census. Dantewada is the administrative seat of the district of the same name .

Dantewada is located at the mouth of the Shankhini River and the Dankini River , a left tributary of the Indravati . The city is located 75 km west of Jagdalpur . A railway line leads from Kirandul, 30 km south, via Dantewada to Jagdalpur.

The city is one of the oldest cities in India and was formerly the capital of a kingdom and also known as Tarlapal and Dantawali. The name of the city is derived from the goddess Danteshwari, who is considered the incarnation of Shakti .
