The Danzturm is a 28 m high observation tower and monument in Iserlohn in the Sauerland .

Geographical location

The tower is a landmark on the Fröndenberg in the Iserlohn city forest above the Rupenteich at 384.5 m above sea level. NN . The Obergrüne district is southwest of the tower , and Iserlohn city center to the northeast.

history

The Danzturm was built in 1908/1909 in direct structural connection to the extension building of the former optical telegraph station no. 43, which was part of the Berlin – Coblenz telegraph line established in 1833 . It was named after Ernst Danz , an honorary citizen of Iserlohn, who died on May 28, 1905 . He had made a name for himself in the field of higher education, among other things.

To finance the construction of the tower , a bazaar organized as a large folk festival took place in the old hall on the Alexanderhöhe on October 10th and 11th, 1908. In the Iserlohner Tageblatt on October 1st the "Danzturm-Bazaar" was announced. Two days before the start of the event, the daily newspaper again called for active participation and donations. About 12,500 marks could be collected at the bazaar .

The inauguration of the tower took place on May 22, 1909 on the Telegraphenberg with a grand ceremony and the address of the then First Mayor Hölzerkopf. The Sauerland Mountain Association put a memorial plaque on the tower for its founding member Danz.

The Danzturm became the symbol of the city and survived the First and Second World Wars unscathed .

description

The Danzturm is freely accessible as long as the restaurant in the neighboring building is open. When you have climbed the 100 steps to the viewing platform on the outside, you can see the city of Iserlohn from it and, in good weather, you can see as far as Dortmund , Unna and Hamm .

Others

From 1957 to 1975 the local history magazine “Der Danzturm” was published by the Sauerland Mountain Association.

Until the 1970s, the tower with the city forest was depicted by the Iserlohn brewery as a motif on beer bottles, glasses and lids as well as on promotional items. Until the Iserlohn private brewery closed in 2014, the tower could only be seen in the company logo.

The Danzturm not only serves as a meeting point for hiking groups, but is also a venue for cultural events.
