The Darden Graduate School of Business Administration , founded in 1954, is the Graduate Business School of the University of Virginia in Charlottesville , Virginia . It was named after Colgate Whitehead Darden Jr. , a former Democratic congressman, governor of Virginia, and president of the University of Virginia.

Darden MBA

Darden offers a two-year MBA course that relies heavily on case-based teaching methods (“case studies”) (see case study ); these are similar to the teaching methods used in many law schools and Harvard Business School . This is remarkable in that the Darden School is one of the few prominent business schools that teaches exclusively by the case (study) method. Dardens case (study) method is dependent on very intensive preparation (individually and in study groups) and deep discussions in the courses. In 2002 Darden expanded the class size by 20 percent from 250 to over 300 students. Since August 1, 2005 , the dean of the Darden School has been Robert Bruner , who is also the Distinguished Professor of Business Administration (as of 2013).

The business school is known for its strength in general management and is regularly listed as one of the top 15 business schools in the world by BusinessWeek , The Economist Which MBA , Forbes , US News & World Report and more.

Darden offers its students various, mostly performance-related scholarships, so that the students can better finance the quite high tuition fees (approx. 49,500 US dollars per year).

In addition to the two-year full-time course, the Darden School also offers “Executive Education” programs (both as “Open” and “Custom” programs). Executive education programs focus on topics such as sustainability, a high level of service, management, strategic change and negotiation. In June 2006 the Darden School started an “MBA for Executives” program that lasts 22 months.

Batten Institute

The Batten Institute is a major institution in the Darden School of Business. As a think tank, the Batten Institute invests in applied research and knowledge transfer, focusing on changes in organizations, markets and technologies. The institute is a link between practitioners and scientists with the aim of promoting new practical knowledge about economic innovation and change. Founded in 1996, the institute received a $ 60 million donation in 2000 from Frank Batten, Sr., University of Virginia alumnus and retired Chairman and CEO of Landmark Communications and founder of the Weather Channel .

Ratings ("Rankings")

When choosing a suitable MBA program, applicants usually pay close attention to the various assessments, which are available in large numbers and with very different underlying research methods. The Darden School is often rated as one of the top 15 business schools in the world. The placements as of September 2010 are:

  • US News & World Report rated Darden number 13 in 2011 (2010: 13, 2009: 15, 2008: 14, 2007: 12, 2006: 13, 2005: 14).
