The Dart 18 is a two-hand boat class that belongs to the one-design catamaran classes.
history
The Dart 18 was created in 1975 and was developed by Rodney March , who also created the Tornado , as a strict One Design class . Further development steps have been made to this day, but the concept stipulated by the strict building regulations has been retained. More than 8,350 units had been built by 2016 and are on the road in 16 nations on four continents. Windsport International has held the worldwide manufacturing license since 2012 . The boats have been built by Collins Fiberglass Plastics in South Africa since 2005 and again in Europe since 2012.
hull
The hulls of the dart are very similar to the design of the Tornado, except that the swords are not used. Instead, the hulls in the lower area received the fins typical of beach catamarans. The material is plastic ( GRP ) with a thickness of a few millimeters in the upper and side areas. The material thickness can be up to centimeters at individual, more heavily stressed areas, such as the fins.
Both hulls are filled with floats to maintain buoyancy in the event of damage. The interior of a fuselage can be reached via an inspection cover, which is located in the area of the rear beam images.
Rigging, rigging, sails
The rig consists of a rotatable mast, which is held by a pair of shrouds and a forestay. The shrouds can be adjusted by simply moving the lower retaining bolts on the shrouds. The Dart 18 does not have spreaders .
The main sail is driven without a boom and is completely battened with nine battens. The jib has a simple translation in the sheet.
equipment
The Dart 18 is often upgraded with a gennaker , as it has been officially used in the tornado since its revision in 2000. This enables a significant increase in speed on downwind and spacing courses. However, this is not permitted when racing the Dart 18. In addition, a jib furling system is usually installed in order to be able to recover the headsail when setting the gennaker.
In addition, as is usual with many sporty regatta boats, the bow can use a trapezoidal device . A trapeze for the helmsman is not often seen, but the brackets are there.
