The area

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The area was a website and citizens' initiative against landscape fragmentation in the Bavarian Forest that existed from 2008 to around 2012 . The website showed pictures of construction work in the Bavarian Forest, in particular road construction , documented the criticism and resistance against individual projects and provided space for discussions. What was new was that it was only the existence of the website and its rapid media presence that shook citizens against a road construction project and brought them together.

prehistory

Large clearings in the forest between Frauenau and Klingenbrunn gave the impetus in autumn 2007 that the web designer Sabine Macht from Riedlhütte ( Freyung-Grafenau district ) first asked the district office , then the road administration about the meaning of the measure. The sparse responses from the authorities gave Sabine Macht the idea of launching a website initiative against the destruction of the landscape in the Bavarian Forest .

The website was launched on March 11, 2008 with photos of the deforestation, reader comments and appeals to politicians, tourism professionals and entrepreneurs.

State road Frauenau-Klingenbrunn

The construction of a 2.6-kilometer-long section of Glasstraße (St 2132) south of Frauenau ( Regen district ), with the aim of straightening 3 curves, was carried out without a plan approval procedure, i.e. without the participation of associations and citizens. Starting with the first publications on Das Areal , a movement quickly formed that tried to prevent construction. There were letters to the editor and letters to those responsible, local meetings, a protest march in the forest, a collection of signatures and several petitions to the Bavarian state parliament .

The Passauer Neue Presse and its local editions, Die Neue Woche, and the Bayerwald Wochenblatt reported on the local media, and nationally the 'East Bavarian magazin lichtung', the magazine Schöner Bayerischer Wald, the Straubinger Tagblatt , the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and the Süddeutsche Zeitung reported . The Bavarian television broadcast on 14 May 2008 in the evening news live from the construction site and in the cultural magazine Capriccio on 12 June 2008, a portrait of Sabine power and the website the area . The construction of the road section could no longer be prevented, but the debates about the sense of further road construction in the Bavarian Forest continued for even longer.

Expansion of the area

The experience from Frauenau showed that citizens' participation in planning must start at an early stage. The area later offered a forum for almost all road construction projects in the Bavarian Forest and possible alternatives such as the Bavarian Forest Railway , but also for other controversial topics such as discount stores or regional architecture. Because developments in the region cannot be viewed separately from global contexts, Sabine Macht started the open project Das Areal II in November 2008 as an inventory and almost a year later Areal3 with future prospects. There she asked for constructive opinions and ideas on how real democracy, justice and balanced living conditions can be created in Germany and around the world .

aftermath

As with most citizens' initiatives, the work of Das Areal only lasted for a few years. The website was last updated in 2012. Since then, Das Areal does not seem to have seen any more activity.
