Glass Street
The Glasstraße is a 250 km long holiday route in Eastern Bavaria . It connects Waldsassen in the north with Passau in the south and leads via Neustadt an der Waldnaab in several routes across the Upper Palatinate Forest and the Bavarian Forest .
The Glass Road leads through the impressive landscapes of the Upper Palatinate Forest and the Bavarian Forest , with the focus on glass . Places with the endings -hütt or -schleif attest to a 700-year tradition of glass production and refinement in this region . Even today, there are still numerous companies located on Glasstrasse that deal with the subject of glass: glassblowers , glassworks , engravers , glass cutters , glass refiners, and glass artists manufacture (partly publicly) glass in all its diversity. From the Christmas tree ball to innovative wine glasses to a whole glass forest, everything is on offer on the Glasstraße.
Founded by Ernst Hinsken , Günther Keilwerth and Klemens Unger in 1997, Glasstrasse was opened in the same year by the then Federal Chancellor Helmut Kohl . Since then, the European Glass Music Festival, the award of the Glass Street Prize, the Zwieseler Glastage, the Frauenau Glass Street Festival as well as exhibitions and Christmas markets in numerous glassworks have taken place here on a regular basis.
48 towns and eight districts in Eastern Bavaria are members of the Glasstrasse working group, which is coordinated by the Eastern Bavaria Tourist Board.
